Ok, I barely qualify as a Millenial, but after working in tech for 10 years, I have to say, IT’S ABOUT FREAKING TIME!
Maybe it’s that I’m working with a startup growing into a large company, maybe it’s that you have to know what Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. are in order to do this job, or maybe it’s just that 10 years later the vast majority of the tech industry is starting to be the maturing millenial population.
And that’s a damn good thing. Here’s what I’m noticing that these awesome people bring to the table:
- Speed. You know that criticism the oldies give about millenials how they want instant gratification? Guess where that is awesome? Business. Especially businesses targeted towards the same millenials that want things fast. Oh, it’s so beautiful.
- Love. Millenials are criticized for holding out for the “right” job or only doing what they love doing. But you know what that means? You work with passionate people who enjoy their jobs instead of people who just collect a paycheck.
- Multitasking. I got criticized at a job once because I had Netflix on in the background while working. My husband has gotten criticized for listening to music at work. But guess, what? Millenials are used to background noise. Sometimes we need it, sometimes we require it, but best of all–we can tune it out. And we understand that we need that background noise sometimes to be effective. So we focus on results on on appearances. Boom.
All I’m saying is, embrace the millenials. They are fast, good, passionate, and don’t waste time. This is what you want in an employee. For sure.
